The National Adoption Service has been created to improve services for all those affected by adoption in Wales.
Launched in November 2014, it is one of the initiatives developed in response to Welsh Government’s Social Services and Well Being Act 2014.
This unique service brings together local government with partners in the voluntary sector to deliver the best possible service to those children in Wales who need adoptive families, adults who are or may become, adoptive parents as well as other children and adults affected by adoption.
In December 2012, Gwenda Thomas, Assembly Member and former Deputy Minister for Social Services said that the challenge for the National Adoption Service was to
“…….address current concerns without losing the undeniable strengths of the existing system – achieving change without detriment.”

All adoption services to children and adults continue to be provided by the five regional adoption services and voluntary adoption agencies.

Working closely with the regional adoption services and voluntary adoption agencies, the Director of Operations leads the National Adoption Service supported by a small central team. Their role it is to drive improvement, consistency and co-ordination.

The National Adoption Service as a whole is overseen by a Governance Board and an Advisory Group. At the local level Regional Management Committees oversee the regional services.
