Whether in the media, discussed between friends or read about in books, time and time again we see and hear the word adoption, but what does it really mean?
The definition of adopting a child
Adoption is about making a life-long commitment to provide a loving, eternal family for a child or young person, who for whatever reason cannot live with their biological family.
Once an adoption order is granted, the adopters become the child’s legal parents; they will have the same rights and responsibilities as the birth parents did.
All legal ties between the child and the birth parents are lost, and once the order has been granted it cannot be reversed. The child will become part of the adoptive parent’s family, therefore taking the family name.
Adoption can be difficult initially, but once everything comes together the benefits can be tremendous. For any adult who cannot have children by natural means but has the desire to love, care and support a child, adoption is certainly an option to consider.
How to begin the adoption process
Once you’ve decided to become an adopter, you’ll want to find out everything you can concerning the adoption journey.
The first stage of the process is to contact your local adoption agency directly, they will be able to supply you with information you require and send out a useful information pack. In addition, you’ll also be invited to an information event where you and other adopter hopefuls can learn more about the process.
After this stage, if you are still firm in your decision to adopt, an employee from the agency will arrange a home visit to explain the adoption journey in more detail, including how the agency works. This is where you’ll have a chance to sit down one on one and receive answers to any queries and concerns.
Shortly after the home visit you will be invited to participate in preparation training in advance of your adoption assessment. The adoption assessment is thorough and prospective adopters can expect the process to take up to 6 months, your local adoption agency will be there to offer support every step of the way. A social worker will carry out the assessment.
